Construction Begins on Missing Link of Dublin Port Cycle Route
Construction has started on the missing link of the Dublin Port cycle route.
The project fills a key gap in Dublin’s coastal cycling network.
The new section will run for about 1.4 kilometres.
It will link the River Liffey near the East Link Bridge to the Tolka Estuary Greenway.
The route runs beside East Wall Road and Bond Road inside Dublin Port.
Cyclists will no longer need to use the busy road leading to the Dublin Tunnel.
Why This Route Matters
This area carries heavy traffic every day.
Cyclists have long raised safety concerns.
The new path will be fully separated from vehicles.
It will support both cyclists and pedestrians.
The route will also serve ferry passengers and port workers.
It offers a direct and safer way to reach the port.
Construction Timeline
The project will be built in two phases.
The first phase is now underway.
The full route is expected to be completed in stages.
Final works are planned to finish by around 2030.
Traffic signals and safe crossings are part of the plan.
A new cycle bridge over Promenade Road will also be built.
Links to the Wider Network
The new section connects directly to the Tolka Estuary Greenway.
That greenway opened in 2024 along the north side of the port.
Together, the routes form part of the planned East Coast Trail.
This trail will run from Sutton to Sandycove.
The project also supports walking and outdoor access.
Some historic port walls will remain for heritage reasons.
What Happens Next
Cyclists should see steady progress over the coming months.
Temporary changes may affect nearby roads during works.
Once complete, the route will create a continuous coastal cycle path.
It will link Dublin city centre directly with the port area.
